How to Use The WAX

Mastering Bike Maintenance : A guide to Using CyclingCeramic Wax for Optimal Chain Performance

Maintaining your bike chain is essential to ensure smooth riding and prolong the lifespan of your bicycle. Among the various maintenance methods, using wax to lubricate the chain is gaining popularity for its numerous benefits. Unlike traditional oil-based lubricants, wax provides a clean and long-lasting solution that repels dirt and dust, while reducing wear and friction. In this guide, we will explore the steps for applying wax to the bike chain, its advantages over conventional lubricants, and tips for keeping your chain in perfect working condition. Get ready to discover an effective new way to maintain your bike with wax!

Chain Preparation:

  • Begin by removing the chain from the bike or by using a brand new chain.
  • Clean the chain thoroughly using a solvent such as White Spirit or mineral degreaser. Immerse the chain completely in the solvent for 20-60 minutes using the poly bag provided with the wax (be sure to wear goves).
  • Shake the bag with the chain for 2 minutes before removing the chain and allowing it to dry fully for 10-12 hours. Optionally, rinse the chain with 98% alcohol to remove any remaining residue.
  • Solvent cleaning is only necessary for the initial cleaning in order to remove oils.

 Application Process:

1. If the chain becomes dirty, clean it by pouring hot water over it and allowing it to dry. This method prevents contamination of the wax in the crockpot, prolonging its usefulness.
2. Melt CyclingCeramic wax in a crockpot (slow cooker) on medium heat until the wax is completely melted. The wax melts at around 70°C (160°F), but heat it to approximately 90°C (194°F).
3. Fully immerse the chain in the molten wax and wait for the wax buildup on the chain to melt again (minimum 10-15 minutes – IMPORTANT!). Use a metal cable to thread both ends of the chain to ease immersion.
4. Gently shake the chain in the liquid wax (using the metal cable) for about 3-5 minutes to ensure the wax penetrates the pins. Bend the links to facilitate wax penetration.
5. Remove the chain, hang it, and gently wipe off excess wax from the side of the chain links. Allow it to cool for approximately 40 minutes.
6. Once cooled to room temperature, hold the chain in one hand and run it between the fingers of your other hand to ensure smoothness (as shown in our video).

Troubleshooting:

  • If the chain squeaks after a few hours of dry riding, it indicates a lack of wax due to improper waxing. Ensure the wax temperature is correct and wait at least 10-15 minutes after immersing the chain before shaking.
  • If wax flakes off during turbo-trainer sessions, it suggests the chain wasn’t wiped properly after hanging to dry. Ensure the waxing temperature is correct and wipe the outside of the chain with a paper towel before cooling.

Warning:

  • Always wear appropriate protective clothing, gloves, and safety glasses when working with hot wax.
  • Never leave a working crockpot unattended. After use, turn off the crockpot and ensure the melted wax is not accessible to children or unauthorized individuals.
  • Use only a crockpot (slow cooker) to melt the wax; never use an oven, microwave, or stove.
  • Do not exceed a temperature of 100°C (212°F) and avoid exposing the wax to open flames.Keep the wax away from children and use it in a well-ventilated space.
